Linger Tour: Interview + Giveaway!

20 July 2010

Thanks to Samantha Grefe from Scholastics for working out the interview and giveaway!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a neurotic writer and musician with slightly anarchistic tendencies. I like cookie dough, dogs, and John Singer Sargent. I live with my fantastic husband and two kids in Virginia. Oh yeah, and I have a 1973 Camaro named Loki. Is that enough?

How do you manage to make your writing poetic while still keeping it into young adult literature?

Well, I -- I’m trying to think of how to answer this. I write for me, first of all. So the stories come out of the faucet with a 28 year old Maggie as their intended audience. What that says about me, I’m not sure. But the other thing is this: I don’t believe in dumbing down YA literature. I don’t think there’s a specific prose level that is YA appropriate. If I feel like using a 40 point word in my novels, I go ahead and use it. I write for upper teens and they’re basically adults. They are ready to handle just about everything you throw at them, and if they’re not, they’re quite willing to find out how to handle it.

What’s your favorite thinking place?

In my car. All of my good ideas happen when I’m going over 65 miles per hour.

Where or what is your inspiration for creating the characters?

I steal from everyone and everything. Some of the characters explore things about me, some of them explore my friends, some explore random people, and most are actually a combination of all of those. That’s one of the things I love about being able to write a short story every month for Merry Sisters of Fate (www.merryfates.com) -- I can try on a different character without having to make the commitment of an entire novel.

Is there a message you want to get out to your readers?

Fight. Never settle. If you want to be a race car driver, get out there and drive cars. If you want to be a novelist, write your butt off. Don’t let excuses and the real world get in your way.

  7. I took a peek at some of Maggie's stuff last week at the bookstore. While I would say the writing seemed as if it would appeal to a teenage crowd, I didn't think it seemed very poetic.
